The Pacers became the first team to draw from the high school ranks in back-to-back drafts when they selected Jonathan Bender fourth overall in the 1999 NBA Draft. Bender's rookie campaign got off to a slow start when he broke a bone in his nonshooting wrist during training camp and missed the first 18 games of the season. He didn't see much action after his return, either, averaging only 5.4 minutes in 24 games.
