Athletic competition of the XXVII Summer Games officially started with its tradition of soccer preliminaries getting underway before the Opening Ceremonies. Four men’s and two women’s matches were contested with a total of 21 goals being scored. The biggest surprise of the day was Nigeria needing a goal in stoppage time to tie Honduras 3-3.
