Getting on track

Sydney's 110,000-seat Olympic Stadium came alive on Friday. As several of the most popular events of the Games got under way, medals were decided in two events. Finland's Arsi Harju captured gold in the shot put and Poland's Robert Korzeniowski won the 20-kilometer race walk. The precompetition hype is finally complete -- so that the Marion Joneses, Cathy Freemans and Javier Sotomayors of the world may be judged based simply on their performances. Click on the images below for some of the photos captured from the first day of track and field.
