The 19th Winter Olympiad opened in 30-degree temperatures before more than 52,000 spectators in Rice-Eccles Stadium and four billion viewers worldwide. The Winter Games returned to U.S. soil for the first time in 22 years and featured Native Americans and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to welcome the world to Utah.
