Former NFL safety Darren Sharper appeared in a California court on Wednesday, but his scheduled back-to-back hearings on sexual assault allegations were postponed until Aug. 8, according to the Associated Press.

The first of Wednesday's proceedings was to set a preliminary hearing date for the charges Sharper faces in California, while the second regarded Sharper's potential extradition to Arizona. But Sharper only answered a procedural question from the judge before the hearings' postponement.

Sharper is charged with drugging and raping two women in October after meeting them at a nightclub in West Hollywood. Sharper was being held in a Los Angeles jail and is also accused of drugging and raping three women in Arizona. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in California.

ROSENBERG & EVANS: The case against Darren Sharper:

According to a police report, Sharper met two women at Bootsy Bellows, a West Hollywood, California nightclub on Oct. 30. After leaving the club and arriving in his hotel room, Sharper poured them a drink, and both women blacked out afterward. One woman told police she woke up with Sharper sexually assaulting her in his bedroom. The other woman said she woke up on a sofa, walked into the bedroom and stopped the assault.

Sharper again went to the same bar, this time on Jan. 14, and met two other women, according to authorities. He took the women back to the hotel room, poured them drink and they blacked out, according to a police report. One woke in the morning and, the report says, “felt as though she had been sexually assaulted.”

Sharper, 38, played for the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints in his NFL career.
