Kessel scores two as Leafs take brawl-filled win vs. Sabres
TORONTO -- An array of fighting majors and 10-minute misconducts left the benches bare at the end of the Toronto Maple Leafs' 5-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.
Phil Kessel scored his first two goals of the preseason and was the flashpoint of the fighting at 10:01 of the third when he was targeted by the Sabres' John Scott.
Kessel backed away from Scott while twice swinging his stick at the Sabres' tough guy before some of his teammates jumped in.
That precipitated a line brawl with the Leafs' David Clarkson jumping off the bench to join the fray, and a goalie fight between Buffalo's Ryan Miller and Toronto's Jonathan Bernier.
Clarkson is subject to an automatic 10-game suspension in the regular season.
Josh Leivo had the winner for the Leafs, who also got goals from Trevor Smith and Jake Gardiner. Nikita Zadorov, Jamie McBain and Corey Tropp scored for Buffalo.
DETROIT -- Byron Froese scored his second goal 3:25 into the third period and the Chicago Blackhawks held on for a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in a preseason game Sunday.
Joakim Nordstrom and Garret Ross also scored for Chicago and Corey Crawford made 30 saves.
Tomas Tatar scored twice for Red Wings (2-3-0), Jonathan Ericsson added a goal and Gustav Nyquist had three assists. Jimmy Howard stopped 16 of 20 shots before being replaced by Jared Coreau early in the third period. Coreau made four saves.
Tatar opened the scoring 7:29 into the game and Froese answered 1:49 later. Nordstrom's tally came with 2:54 left in the first.
Ross and Froese scored less than a minute apart early in the third.
Tatar got his second goal, on the power play, with 7:02 left and Ericsson's goal came with 41 seconds to go.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Pekka Rinne made 13 saves in his first preseason game to lead the Nashville Predators to a 2-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday night.
Rinne played two periods in his first game since left hip surgery in early May.
Gabriel Bourque scored 3:07 into the second period and Austin Watson tallied 5:15 later for Nashville.
Injuries limited Bourque to 34 games for the Predators last season.
Watson, a first-round selection of the Predators in 2010, saw his first NHL action last season and scored one goal for Nashville.
Carter Hutton, signed in the offseason to be Rinne's backup, played the final period, making 12 saves.
Anders Nilsson stopped 23 shots for the Islanders.
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Semyon Varlamov made 37 saves and Brad Malone got the go-ahead goal with 11:33 left in the third, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 preseason victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night.
Guillaume Desbiens opened the scoring for Colorado at 12:20 of the second period with a 45-foot wrist shot past Jonas Hiller's glove, following a turnover by forward Jakob Silfverberg in the Anaheim zone. Silfverberg left the game with 5:02 remaining because of an undisclosed injury.
Kyle Palmieri tied it 57 seconds into the third on a breakaway goal set up by defenseman Francois Beauchemin, who played his first game since reconstructive surgery on his right knee.
Hiller finished with 23 saves.
Varlamov had a league-worst 21 losses and a 3.02 goals-against average for Colorado during the lockout shortened 48-game schedule in 2012-13.
