10 Questions Ann Marsh, fencer, three-time Olympian
Ann Marsh finished seventh in the 1996 Olympics, the highest U.S. women’s result in 40 years. Marsh, 29, recently graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. The Michigan native is currently practicing in Buffalo, New York. 1. What have you seen since coming to Sydney? I’ve gone to the zoo and the aquarium. Saw kangaroos, wallabies at the zoo. Also went to the Opera House. 2. This is your third Olympics. How is it different than 1992 and 1996? In Barcelona, I was young and our fencing team was not very good. I had fun, a great time. In ’96, we had improved so much. We had been training together and I finished seventh. Now, the team is even stronger, but I’ve been in medical school, so have not concentrated on my training as much. 3. Do you ever watch the sword fights in the movies? That’s not what fencing is. It’s about precision and speed and strength. There are many different styles and strategies, and you have to think on your feet all the time and try to fake your opponent out. 4. Now that you’ve graduated from medical school, what type of doctor will you be? I’m going into emergency medicine. I’ve moved from Rochester, where I trained and went to school, to Buffalo, and am now in a rotation at five different hospitals. 5. What’s been the most fun part of living in the Village? Meeting other athletes. The fencing team is sharing a house with the judo team, so we are learning a lot about that sport, too. 6. Will you stay in the Village through your events? No, we are going to move to an apartment closer to the venue in Darling Harbor. That way, we’ll be able to walk to the competition site and will not have to ride the bus. 7. How did you get started in fencing? I started in school in Michigan when I was in seventh grade, and just loved the sport. 8. What was the coolest part of Opening Ceremonies? When they lit the torch and there was all the fire and the water. It was pretty exciting. We just stood there in awe. 9. What else was happening on the Stadium floor? When we were walking in, the soccer players were behind us. They were screaming and yelling that “Who let the dogs out” song. The basketball players started answering with other verses, then everyone joined in. 10. How have you been preparing for the start of the competition? We’ve had some hard practices, but are now going to have light workouts. We practiced with the Hungarian team the other day, but now will take a day off, do some light stretching and get ready.
