SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) -- Russia defeated France 45-32 on Sunday night to win the men's team sabre.

In the bronze medal match, Germany defeated Romania 45-27.

"We had a strong team," Russia's Alexei Frossine said. "It was our main event for the competition and we feel great happiness. The last tussle put some psychological pressure on us, but not too much."

"We want to be successful," Germany's Damien Touya said. "We will try to beat our neighbors here on the stage. We will be training and be back in four years."

Russia won four medals in fencing, including gold in men's individual epee and women's team epee.

Italy also finished with three golds and five medals overall. South Korea, Romania, France and Hungary each won a gold.

The Russians won seven of the nine bouts in the team sabre final and had draws in the other two.

Stanislav Pozdniakov, who surprisingly failed to medal in the individual event, won three of his bouts. Sergei Charikov, who appeared to hurt his ankle in Sunday's quarterfinals, performed well, as did final team member Alexei Frossine.

France's Damien Touya, the 1999 world champion, lost his three bouts.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
