SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) -- Australia defeated the Netherlands 5-0 on Friday to advance to the women's field hockey final.

The Hockeyroos outplayed the Dutch with three goals in five minutes either side of halftime.

Alyson Annan scored from a penalty stroke following the halftime siren after Rechelle Hawkes was tripped in the circle by Ageeth Boomgaardt with three seconds on the clock.

Two minutes after the break Hawkes deflected a corner and the 15,000 roaring fans had hardly sat down when Katrina Powell swatted in a rebound after her initial shot had been saved.

The last half hour was merely an exhibition, with Australia missing five more chances before Annan put away a fourth goal five minutes from time.

Jenny Morris converted a stroke in the last minute.

Though the Dutch women lost, they still have a chance to move into the finals depending on their performance in the next medal pool matches Wednesday.

The Hockeyroos are on 10 points with China on four.

Argentina is on six points and is Australia's most likely rival after beating China 2-1 earlier Monday.

The Dutch desperately needed a win to re-ignite their stalled campaign after Sunday's 3-1 loss to Argentina.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
