SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) -- Makoto Takimoto of Japan defeated Cho In-Chul of South Korea in the 81-kilogram gold medal match.

His gold medal victory capped off a run of three upset wins against Ruslan Seilkhanov of Kazakstan, Argentina's Gaston Garcia and Alvaro Paseyro of Uruguay.

Aleksei Budolin of Estonia and Nuno Delgado of Portugal shared the bronze.

Severine Vandenhende of France defeated Li Shufang of China to win the gold medal in women's 63-kilogram judo. Jung Sung-sook of South Korea and Gella Vandecaveye of Belgium shared the bronze medal.

Takimoto, the Japanese champion, showed his skill by winning ippons in the first two matches and against Paseyro in the third contest.

Jason Morris, the 1992 silver medalist from Scotia, N.Y., lost to Australian Daniel Kelly in the second round.

World champion Graeme Randall of Britain showed his frustration after a loss by not bowing to the referee or his Iranian opponent. The referee insisted that Randall complete the bows before leaving the mat.
