SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) -- Pia Hansen's broke the Olympic record of 141 set by American Kim Rhode in the 1996 games on her way to winning gold in the women's double trap shooting.
Hansen broke 148 targets Tuesday. Rhode won the bronze with 139, behind the 144 of silver medalist Deborah Gelisio of Italy. Hansen ran up a big lead in qualifying, breaking 112 targets to 107 for Gelisio and 103 for Rhode. In the finals, Gelisio added 37, and Hansen and Rhode 36 each. In the men's 50-meter pistol competition, Tanyu Kiriakov of Bulgaria, a gold medalist at the 1988 Olympics, won with 666 points. Igor Basinsky of Belarus won the silver and Martin Tenk of the Czech Republic the bronze. Basinsky, who won the gold at this year's Atlanta World Cup event, defended the silver medal he won at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Kiriakov, the 10-meter air pistol champion at the Seoul Games in 1988, entered the eight-man final on top with 570 points. He scored over 10 points in five of the 10 rounds in the final to hold off Basinsky, who scored 663.3. Wang Yifu of China,the current world champion, finished sixth with 659.0 points. Wang was the 10-meter air pistol silver medalist in these games. Atlanta gold medalist Boris Kokorev, of Russia, failed to reach the finals. He scored 559 points and finished in a 12th-place tie. American Bill Demarest, the event's world record holder, scored 552 points and placed 23rd.
