Medal round explainer
BLACKTOWN, Australia (AP) -- The top four teams in the eight-team Olympic softball tournament will advance to the medal round, which will be settled using an unconventional method called the Page System. Rather than matching the No. 1 seed against No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3 in a pair of equal semifinals, the top two teams play each other, and the third and fourth teams do as well. The winner of the game between the highest-ranked teams advances directly to the gold medal game. The loser of the No. 1 vs. No. 2 game plays the winner of Nos. 3 and 4 in the ``final.'' The loser of the final gets the bronze medal, and the winner plays for the gold medal in the ``grand final.''
