Last-ditch effort Despite suspension, Baumann still looking to run
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Former Olympic 5,000-meter champion Dieter Baumann filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in a last-ditch effort to lift his drug suspension in time to run in the Olympic Games. However, the International Amateur Athletic Federation, the governing body for track and field, already has said it does not recognize the court's jurisdiction. The court is convened in Sydney to hear cases involving the Olympics. An IAAF arbitration panel ruled on Monday that Baumann, the gold medalist in the 1992 Barcelona Games, will be suspended from competition for two years for twice testing positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone. The IAAF ruling council refused to reconsider the penalty on Tuesday. The appeal contends that the IAAF panel's ruling "is ineffective with regard to the Olympic Games and does not affect the athlete's admission to the Olympic Games." The International Olympic Committee, however, leaves it up to the governing bodies of each sport to determine an athlete's eligibility, so the basis of the appeal was unclear. Baumann has been outspoken in his criticism of those who use performance-enhancing drugs. He contends that someone spiked his toothpaste. A hearing on his appeal was scheduled Thursday. The 1,500-meter preliminaries are scheduled for Sept. 27.
