Jenny Thompson Jenny Thompson, who will compete in Saturday's 4x100 freestyle relay, rejoices after winning the 100 butterfly final in the U.S. Olympic Trials in August. Al Bello/Allsport

Making a splash

While basketball, soccer and volleyball plod through opening rounds, swimming wastes no time breaking out the hardware. NBC has its eyes on the pool, where host-nation hero Ian Thorpe looks to dominate the 400 freestyle and Jenny Thompson has a chance to become the most-decorated U.S. female Olympian by winning a sixth gold. NBC opens its Sydney broadcast at 4 p.m. ET/PT, preceded by six hours of daytime coverage on MSNBC.
