Australia was planning on turning the Sydney Aquatic Centre into its personal party house, with the country’s favorite son Ian Thorpe at the center. But Monday Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband edged Thorpe for the gold medal in the 200-meter freestyle. The Flying Dutchman matched the world-record time of 1 minute, 45:35 seconds he set on Sunday. Thorpe, the former world-record holder, finished in 1:45:83, adding a silver medal to the two golds he has already collected.
