Power surge Hamman breaks two of his U.S. lifting records
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- U.S. champion Shane Hamman set national records for the snatch and total lift Tuesday while finishing second in Group B of Olympic super heavyweight weightlifters. Hamman substantially broke his U.S. record in the snatch, lifting 429 3/4 pounds (195 kilograms) -- or 16 1/2 pounds more than the record 413 1/4 pounds (187.5 kg) he raised during the Olympic trials in July. However, Hamman could not break his record of 507 pounds (230 kg) in the clean and jerk set during the trials. Hamman, his blue singlet smeared with white chalk dust, raised 496 pounds (225 kg) on his first lift, then missed twice at 512 1/2 pounds (232.5 kg). Hamman's total lift of 925 3/4 pounds (420 kg) broke his U.S. record of 920 1/4 pounds (417.5 kg), also set during the trials. Hamman could not carry his performance into the finals, however, and finished 11th overall.
A former power lifter, the Mustang, Okla., resident has been lifting only four years, making the 28-year-old among the most inexperienced of the world-class lifters. Tibor Stark of Hungary won the 14-lifter Group B with a total weight of 936 3/4 pounds (425 kg), or 88 pounds (40 kg) below German Ronny Weller's world record. Raimonds Bermanis of Latvia withdrew with what was initially diagnosed as a dislocated right elbow after dropping a bar loaded with 396 3/4 pounds (180 kg) directly onto his elbow. He returned to the lifting platform to wave to the crowd.
