PROVO, Utah (Ticker) -- Russia put a resounding end to its first appearance in the women's Olympic tournament with a victory in the fifth-place game as Tatiana Burina scored a pair of first-period goals en route to a 5-0 blanking of Germany.

Coming off a third-place finish at last year's World Championships, Russia lost its first two games at Salt Lake City but stormed back to win the last three, outscoring opponents, 13-2.

Irina Gashennikova stopped 25 shots for the shutout and defensemen Elena Bobrova and Zhanna Shchelchkova each contributed two assists for the Russians.

After scoring the only goal Gashennikova needed just 3:24 into the first period, Burina beat Stephanie Wartosch-Kurten on a breakaway at 7:41.

Bobrova and Shchelchkova set up Burina's second goal and also got the assists on Tatiana Tsareva's power-play tally 13:31 into the second period that made it 3-0.

Ekaterina Smolentseva and Svetlana Trefilova padded the lead with third-period goals.

Wartosch-Kurten stopped 37 shots for Germany, which was coming off its first win of the tournament.
