Step back and let life happen Updated: Thursday July 19, 2001 2:44 PM
Canadian Jennifer Heil, 18, became one of the youngest skiers to win a World Cup medal when she won silver in moguls at the 2001 Mondial Ericsson World Cup event. Nicknamed "Little Pepper", Heil was the 2000 national champion in single and double moguls. Check out Heil's CNNSI.com diary as she trains for the 2002 Olympic Games.

Rain has grounded the team from taking off in the helicopter here at Mike Wiegele's Heli-Ski Resort. The team has already experienced a couple of great on snow days. Believe me, beginning your day hearing the roar of the helicopter, standing next to land on a private glacier arranged for the Canadian National Mogul Team is pretty amazing! We have been fortunate enough to receive some financial help allowing us to access these amazing facilities in our own country. Europe would normally be our destination for training.
Although at the moment the number of on snow days is not ideal, this camp has taken shape as a psychological and team building event. With the help of a sport psychologist the team has effectively put aside internal issues that were negatively affecting our overall performance on the slopes. Even though mogul skiing is an individual sport, it has been proven again and again that the strongest competitors emerge from a group of people who support each other and constructively push one another to be their best. I believe that the Canadian team is back on track to being stronger than ever. The mix of leadership both from the coaches and skiers, with a huge range in personalities between, is going to create a winning recipe. A very important lesson that I have learned this week is that we don't grow up in one day. Just recently turning 18 makes me an adult, yet that one day of going from 17 to 18 didn't make me feel like I was struck with all of the qualities we consider adult. Being an athlete I expect a lot from myself. This can often be beneficial, but as the saying goes our strengths are also our weaknesses. Often always looking to be better both as a skier and as a person leads to a lack of satisfaction when the present moment slips by. Understanding that each day is a step forward and that when you sit back and add it all up --huge gains will be made. But you have to remember to step back and let life happen. It is happening here at Weigele's. Plenty more ski days are ahead of us combined with weight, dry land and mental training. Weigele's so far has been an awesome opportunity to come to a quiet place and focus on what I love to do! -- Jenn
