Training has been phenomenal

Canadian Jennifer Heil, 18, became one of the youngest skiers to win a World Cup medal when she won silver in moguls at the 2001 Mondial Ericsson World Cup event. Nicknamed "Little Pepper," Heil was the 2000 national champion in single and double moguls. Check out Heil's CNNSI.com diary as she trains for the 2002 Olympic Games.

November 7, 2001
Zermatt, Switzerland

The sun just would not stop shining in the month of October. With it still going strong, I am enjoying another couple of weeks in Zermatt. The training has been phenomenal. Training on two different courses, I am able to prepare for not only a more standard type of mogul terrain but the steeper and deeper moguls, too! Both mogul courses are very challenging. The body feels more acclimatized to the high altitude on this trip. However, when skiing the course at full intensity, I can hardly stand, let alone mutter a word to my coaches at the bottom.

Each morning the team meets at the tram at 9 a.m. Forty minutes later I am on the glacier ready to start my day. A stretch and warm up always takes place for me before entering the moguls. Sometimes the days feel long and if I'm not careful, fatigue can easily occur. However, all I need to do is take a deep breath of the Swiss air and gaze out at the sharp peaks of Europe and I feel recharged for another run.

By constantly drinking water and refueling my body, I'm able to recover by the next ski day. With only three ski days left, this camp has flown by very quickly. I am very excited about the quality of training that has taken place.

The team has been able to experience not only great weather but also a little bit of European culture. Visiting the city of Sion, the team hiked up to a church perched upon the mountainside. Vineyards crisscrossed the mountainsides, creating a beautiful silhouette of contrasts. Later that day we were able to visit a winery and see just exactly how all of this wine making began. Again my European training has been very worth while and enjoyable. This marks the final training camp before the season begins. Stay tuned ...
