'Go Jenn Go' Posted: Saturday December 29, 2001 8:28 AM
Canadian Jennifer Heil, 18, became one of the youngest skiers to win a World Cup medal when she won silver in moguls at the 2001 Mondial Ericsson World Cup event. Nicknamed "Little Pepper," Heil was the 2000 national champion in single and double moguls. Check out Heil's CNNSI.com diary as she trains for the 2002 Olympic Games. December 29, 2001 I was touched by the efforts my own community that went into recognizing my achievements. A group of grade nine students in their leadership class had taken on the efforts of finding sponsors to honor my status of an Olympian. These kids went out into the community finding businesses to back "Go Jenn Go" toques, coffee mugs and T-shirts to create awareness of my involvement in the upcoming games. Early in that week I had visited a group of grade nine students to talk about my years as a competitor, all of the preparation I had put into the last couple of months, and my road of travels in the upcoming year. I loved being able to share all of the great moments and experiences that I have gained through skiing. Understanding that the time and heart of others has helped me along my path it is gratifying just to think that I could have influenced just one of these students in a positive way. An assembly of Woodhaven Jr. High Students greeted me in the gymnasium one morning. Tied into the assembly was the presentation of a giant "Go Jenn Go" banner that now hangs above the City Hall of Spruce Grove. The excitement of these students, teachers, and community members was phenomenal. It feels great to be able to share my anticipation and enthusiasm of my journey leading to Salt Lake. I hope that I will be able to plant the Olympic bug and the desire to strive for excellence the way it has been planted inside of me. I want to thank everyone involved in this project and to all of those rallying behind me! Go Spruce Grove Go!
