SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Fifteen-year-old Ko Gi-hyun of South Korea became the youngest individual winner in Olympic short-track history when she captured a gold medal in the women's 1,500 meters Wednesday night.

Choi Eun-Kyung gave the South Koreans a 1-2 finish in the first medal event of the short-track competition. Bulgaria's Evgenia Radanova took the bronze.

"Because it was the Olympics, I tried even harder than before," Ko said. "I am very happy for Korea because we won two medals today."

South Korea has been a dominant force in short track since it was added to the Olympic program in 1992. Ko's victory was the 10th gold medal for the Asian nation.

In the final, Choi tucked in behind Ko and held off Radanova at the line.

"The gold medalist helped me win the silver medal," Choi said. "If she did not help me, I would not have even won the bronze."
