Boards: The wooden and glass walls that surround the hockey rink.
Body Check: Maneuver in which a player uses the hip and shoulder to slow or stop an opponent who has the puck.
Breakaway: A scoring opportunity that occurs when no defending players are between the puck carrier and the opposing goaltender.
Changing on the Fly: The substitution of players without stoppage of time.
Charging: Illegal maneuver in which a player takes two or more strides before checking an opponent.
Face-off: The method used to start play at any time. The official drops the puck between two opposing competitors facing each other.
Freezing the Puck: Catching or falling on the puck to create a stoppage of play. Only the goaltender can legally freeze the puck.
Hat Trick: Special mention given to a player for scoring three goals in one game.
Power Play: Advantage that occurs when a team has more players on the ice because of a penalty against the opponent.
Slap Shot: Shot in which a player brings the stick back and then quickly forward to fire the puck toward the opposing goaltender.
