Individual Normal Hill
Skiers launch themselves into the air at the end of a 90-meter hill's inrun (downward sloping takeoff ramp), earning style and distance points. The inrun gives competitors the necessary speed to achieve the maximum jumping distance. The hill has a landing area, which is prepared with snow and contains guardrails a height of 70 cm to help a fallen jumper or stop a runaway ski.

Although it appears ski jumpers fly high in the air, they are never more than 4.5 meters (15 feet) to 6 meters (20 feet) above the ground. This is because ski engineers design the hills so that they follow the downhill contours of a ski jumper's flight path.

Individual Large Hill
Competitors jump at the end of a 120-meter hill's inrun, earning style and distance points.

Team Large Hill
Four athletes compete on a team, and each individual takes two jumps on the 120-meter hill. Skiers jump at the end of the inrun, earning style and distance points.
