Soko Yamaoka

  • Sport: Olympic Snowboarding
  • Nation: Japan
  • DOB: May 29, 1974
  • Career Highlights: At 35, Yamaoka is one of the oldest snowboarders on the halfpipe scene, and she’s more than twice the age of at least one of her rivals, the teenage Chinese rider Liu Jiayu. But she’s proven she can still compete with some of the more youthful stars, finishing fourth at the 2009 world championships after winning a silver medal at the same event two years prior. Yamaoka has also been a fixture on the podium on the World Cup circuit, with six golds among her 16 medals since 2002 - including a first-place finish in Stoneham, Quebec, last February. While she may have a tough time against a loaded American-led field for a top spot in Vancouver, Yamaoka could certainly be in the conversation after finishing 10th in the halfpipe at the 2006 Turin Games.
