Lindsey Vonn

  • Sport: Olympic Alpine Skiing
  • Nation: United States of America
  • DOB: October 18, 1984
  • Hometown: Vail, CO
  • Career Highlights: Slated to compete in all five women's alpine events, Vonn has been the poster girl for U.S. medal hopes in the lead-up to the Vancouver Games - but a badly bruised right shin sustained during a slalom run in Austria the week before the Olympics could hamper her performance or even keep her out of competition. As if she wasn't already in the spotlight, Vonn reinforced her standing as the Americans' main star by following a cover shot on Sports Illustrated's Olympic preview and an appearance in its swimsuit issue with a few days' worth of high drama, disclosing her injury less than 72 hours before opening ceremonies. She was able to test the shin on a free run the day before the Games started, but, extending the intrigue, a true training run had been postponed by bad weather. Once again armed with painkillers and numbing cream, the 25-year-old is no stranger to bouncing back from injury. She had a frightening crash during a downhill training run during the 2006 Games and was airlifted to a hospital. Vonn, who thought she had broken her back, miraculously returned and within two days was competing, but did not medal. In Turin, she finished seventh in the super-G, eighth in the downhill and 14th in the slalom, and did not finish the combined nor start the first run in the giant slalom. A three-time Olympian, she finished sixth in the combined and 32nd in slalom at the 2002 Salt Lake Games. Known as the most successful female ski racer in American history, Vonn is the only U.S. woman to have won two World Cup overall titles. She also has two downhill titles and a super-G title, and is the only American woman to win at Italy's Trofeo Topolino (for skiers 11-14) and earn Junior Worlds medals and U.S. titles. Having produced her first World Cup victory six weeks after turning 20, she has more World Cup wins (31) and podium finishes (60) than any American woman. She has four World Championship medals, including two golds in 2009. Vonn is married to 2002 Olympian Thomas Vonn.
