Eric Bernotas

  • Sport: Olympic Skeleton
  • Nation: United States of America
  • DOB: August 5, 1971
  • Hometown: Avondale, PA
  • Career Highlights: Bernotas began competing in skeleton in 2001 after a wrong turn on a road trip brought him to the United States’ training facility in Lake Placid, N.Y. Nine years later, he’s arguably one of the country’s best hopes for a medal in the sport. Bernotas is scheduled to take part in his second Olympics after finishing sixth in 2006 in Turin. He followed with a silver medal in the 2007 world championships but was 12th in 2008 and seventh in 2009. The four-time U.S. national champion has finished in the top 10 in the last five World Cup competitions, including a second-place showing in 2006-07. Bernotas was ninth in 2009-10 and received a medical waiver to enter that competition after suffering a pulled leg muscle during training. He ended the United States men's nearly two-year winless streak in the competition on Jan. 15. Bernotas was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome in 2004, the same year he graduated from West Virginia University with a departmental studies degree. He has also used his training to overcome depression, social anxiety and alcoholism.
