Career Highlights: A consistent performer as Japan’s top-ranked player, Mizutani has competed for his country since the age of 13. His highest world ranking is No. 6, most recently accomplished last October. Domestically, Mizutani set a record by becoming the first player to win Japan’s national championship five times in a row - from 2007-11 - and he was the youngest player to prevail at nationals in 2007 at just 17 years old. He earned a bronze at the 2010 Asian Games, losing to silver medalist Wang Hao of China in the semifinals, and also helped Japan take home bronze in the team event. The left-hander was eliminated in the third round by Greece’s Kalinikos Kreanga in his Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Games and was on the Japanese squad that finished tied for fifth in the team event. Mizutani was one of two non-Chinese quarterfinalists at the 2011 world championships, where he lost in straight sets to Wang. However, being China will be limited to two singles slots at the London Games, he has a good chance of contending for a spot on the podium.
