Katie Taylor

Katie TaylorSport: Boxing

Nation: Ireland

DOB: June 2, 1986

Career Highlights: If she's not the most well-known athlete in her country, Taylor may be the best. Not only has she won four consecutive women's boxing world championships in the lightweight division, but Taylor also has long been a member of Ireland's national women's soccer team. However, her first love is boxing, having come from a family with a background in the sport and taking a liking to it almost immediately. She began boxing at just 12 years old under the guidance of her father, Peter, and has trained with him for her entire career. Taylor made boxing history in her home country at the age of 15, winning the first officially sanctioned women’s bout ever held in Ireland. She has since burst onto the world boxing scene, winning her first major competition at the 2005 European championships and taking home her first world championship in 2006. Taylor continued her dominance in world competition when she crushed home-country star Cheng Dong 13-2 in the 2008 world final in China, earning another gold medal along with being named the best boxer of the tournament. She also defeated Dong 18-5 in the 2010 gold-medal match and would be named AIBA women's boxer of the year for the second straight time. Taylor won her fourth consecutive world title in May, defeating former world champ Sofya Ochigava of Russia 11-7 in the final.
