Nery BrenesSport: Track and Field

Nation: Costa Rica

DOB: September 25, 1985

Career Highlights: Brenes finished fourth at the 2008 World Indoors, an indication he was ready to compete at a high level internationally, and reached the semifinals in the 400 at the Beijing Games before ultimately finishing 10th. But he really began to shine in 2010, winning gold at the Ibero-American Championships and Central American and Caribbean Games. Though his start to 2011 featured a disappointing 17th place finish at the World Championships, he bounced back by winning gold at the Pan-Am Games and turned in his best performance to date in the 2011 World Indoors - a championship-record 45.11 seconds. He still may feel like he has something to prove in London this summer, though. Just two weeks before his triumph at the worlds, Brenes seemingly had locked up the 400 at the Birmingham Grand Prix before accidentally stepping on a trackside billboard and crashing.
