Velimir Stjepanovic
Sport: Swimming
Nation: Serbia
DOB: August 7, 1993
Career Highlights: At only 18 years old, Stjepanovic clocked the world's fastest time for the year in the 200 meter butterfly at 1:56.18 at the
British Gas Swimming Championships in March. That time has subsequently been beaten by other swimmers, but it was more than
one-half second faster than the automatic qualification mark for the Olympics. Despite having lived his entire life in the
United Arab Emirates, Stjepanovic, who won gold in the 100 meter freestyle and 100 fly at the 2011 European Junior Swimming
Championships, will compete for Serbia, where both of his parents are from. Stjepanovic’s training was interrupted for more
than a week in early May when he was diagnosed with gastritis, a condition that effects the lining of the stomach. He viewed
the unscheduled break as a positive, however, as it gave him time to rest a sore back.
