Mary Kom
Sport: Boxing
Nation: India
DOB: March 1, 1983
Career Highlights: Kom has already established herself as an elite boxer, having earned five world championships and 11 national titles. She
started boxing in 2000 and almost immediately discovered her talent and potential, taking home her first world championship
medal with a silver in 2001. Losing in a final would not become a regularity for Kom, as she quickly rebounded the following
year to earn her first gold medal at the worlds. She dominated events for years to come and earned her fifth and most recent
world championship gold in 2010, defeating Duta Seluta of Romania by a 16-6 score. However, Kom is coming off a quarterfinal
loss at this year's worlds - the first time she failed to medal there since 2001 - though a later result at that tournament
got her an Olympic berth. The mother of two has won a variety of awards and honors throughout her career, including being
named one of three AIBA Brand Ambassadors to help women’s boxing become an Olympic sport in 2012. While Kom has had a successful
and meaningful career for the sport of boxing, she has no bigger goal than to bring an Olympic medal back to India. Nicknamed
'Magnificent Mary', Kom is the only female boxer from India to qualify and will look to add to her legacy with gold in London.
