Sam Willoughby
Sport: Cycling
Nation: Australia
DOB: August 15, 1991
Hometown: Trott Park
Career Highlights: If it weren't the case previously, Willoughby solidified himself as a serious Olympic gold medal contender in London after
he won the 2012 BMX world championship in May. At that event, he won all races but his quarterfinal and led from start to
finish in the finals to earn his first world championship. That victory earned the 2008 and 2009 junior world champion an
automatic Olympic bid. āIām going to enjoy this one (and) then switch gears and go for that Olympic one,ā the Australian said.
That world championship victory also was a relief for Willoughby after he finished second in the first three supercross World
Cup races this season. Despite his memorable performance at the worlds, Willoughby still should face some stiff competition
in London from France's Joris Daudet, who came in second at the worlds, and defending Olympic gold medalist Maris Strombergs
of Latvia.
