Paul Biedermann

Paul BiedermannSport: Swimming

Nation: Germany

DOB: August 7, 1986

Hometown: Halle

Career Highlights: Biedermann wasn't quite ready to challenge Michael Phelps in Beijing, where the German finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle while Phelps set the world record in the event to win one of his eight gold medals. But at the world championships the following year, Biedermann broke Phelps' record while beating the American superstar in 1:42.00, part of a stunning double-gold performance that also included a world-record showing in the 400-meter freestyle (3:40.07). Biedermann continues to hold those records, not to mention the short-course marks at both of those distances, but things didn't go quite as well for him at last year's worlds. He won bronze in both the 200 and the 400, with Ryan Lochte and Phelps beating him at the shorter distance and two Asians - South Korea's Park Tae-Hwan and China's Sun Yang - edging him in the longer race. Biedermann will look to bounce back and establish himself on swimming's biggest stage in London, although he acknowledges the 200 could be an epic showdown with Phelps, Lochte and other talented swimmers. "The race of my life, I hope, is yet to come," Biedermann told the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine. "I believe the 200m freestyle final will be one of the best there has been. There won't be one faster any time soon." Biedermann could be comfortable in Europe, where he has been a dominant force in winning eight golds in individual freestyle events at short- and long-course European championships since 2008.
