DOB: November 16, 1983
Career Highlights: Steffen won a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics as a member of Germany's 4x200 meter freestyle relay team at the tender age
of 16. Four years later in Athens, she swam the 4x100 free relay but left without a medal. After nearly quitting the sport
because of a lack of improvement, Steffen took time away from swimming and consulted a psychologist. Soon she was back in
the pool, with a breakthrough coming at the 2006 European championships, where she won gold in the 50 free and broke the world
record in the 100 free en route to another gold. Steffen also helped Germany win gold in the 4x100 and 4x200 free relays.
She added to her collection of gold medals in Beijing with her first ones at the Olympics, winning the 50 and 100 free. However,
she comes off a controversial season that saw her leave the 2011 worlds after a 16th-place finish in the heats of the 100
free, an action which has been harshly criticized by a former teammate and the German media.
