Career Highlights: Thoman will make his Olympic debut in London after finishing second in the 100-meter backstroke behind Matt Grevers in the trials. His lone appearance in the world championships came last year as he finished fourth in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 50 backstroke while earning gold as part of the 400 medley relay team. Thoman has finally blossomed into a contender after finishing fifth at the 2008 trials in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke and finishing 18th in the 100 backstroke in 2004. He was a three-time All-American in college at Arizona. Swimming may run in his genes since his grandfather, Richard, was a world record holder in the backstroke in the 1940s and his father, Henry, swam in college at Duke.
