Rena Wang
Sport: Badminton
Nation: United States of America
DOB: August 15, 1991
Hometown: Arcadia, CA
Career Highlights: Wang is the lone female badminton athlete heading to London to represent the United States, but being along on the world stage
is nothing new. She was also the lone American to compete in singles in last year’s world championships, where she lost in
the first round to Italy’s Agnese Allegrini. Wang and her sister, Iris, did advance to the second round in doubles at the
worlds, however, eventually falling to No. 16 seed Sari Shinta Mulia and Yao Lei of Singapore. Wang is coached by men’s Olympic
team member Tony Gunawan, a former Olympic gold medalist with Indonesia. Currently a biology major at UCLA, Wang showed some
promise last year by winning the Peru International tournament to earn 4,000 rankings points. She has been ranked as high
as No. 48 in the world in singles and as high as No. 25 in doubles with her sister. Unfortunately, Wang will not be competing
in doubles at these Olympics and, with her ranking hovering in the 50s, figures to face some top competition right from the
start in London.
