Spenser Mango

Spenser MangoSport: Wrestling

Nation: United States of America

DOB: July 6, 1986

Career Highlights: Mango has been the dominant U.S. wrestler at 55kg over the past four years and rightly earned a repeat trip to the Olympics after finishing seventh in Beijing in 2008. The U.S. representative at the last three world championships, Mango is hoping for some better luck with the draw in London. At each of the last four major championships (Olympics and worlds), he has faced tough competition early, which hampered his results. Mango finished 27th at the 2011 worlds, 19th in 2010 and ninth in 2009. But he’s still considered a top contender for a medal in London. A native of St. Louis, Mango won two state titles while attending Christian Brothers College High School. He moved on to Northern Michigan University, where he was part of the U.S. Olympic Education Center. Now a member of the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete program, Mango trains in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was the 2006 World University champion and the 2010 U.S. Open champion. One of his two siblings is Ryan, a two-time All-American at Stanford who wrestles in the same weight class as Spenser, though the two have yet to face off at a meet. Mango married Leanne Wuthrich in July 2011.
