Career Highlights: Newell arrives in London fresh off helping the U.S. lightweight four crew (Anthony Fahden, Nick LaCava and Robin Prendes)
edge out the Netherlands at the final Olympic qualification in May. A year ago, Newell and LaCava were on the crew that took
fifth in the lightweight eight at the 2011 world championships. A native of Weston, Mass., Newell is just one year removed
from graduating from Harvard, and six since picking up the sport as a high school junior. The former high school track standout
became the captain of the Crimson's lightweight team, and, as a senior, helped them take second in the varsity lightweight
eight at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association nationals. The 23-year-old finished third in that event during his sophomore
and junior years. His mother, Nelia, earned three letters in rowing from Radcliffe while a Harvard undergraduate in the 1970s.
She’s currently an assistant coach for the Radcliffe lightweight crew. Newell’s brother, Alex, is also on the U.S. national
team. In 2010, Newell helped the lightweight four finish third at the U-23 world rowing championships.
