but he’ll be swimming the 1,500 freestyle in London after edging out Connor Jaeger to win that event. Gemmell will make his
Olympic debut after finishing 10th in the 400 individual medley, 26th in the 1,500 freestyle and 64th in the 200 butterfly
at the 2008 trials. As a junior at Georgia in 2011-12, Gemmell finished fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the NCAA championships
and 12th in the 400 individual medley. Gemmell’s father, Bruce, swam at Michigan and qualified for the Olympic trials in 1980
and 1984.
