Trevor Barron
Sport: Track and Field
Nation: United States of America
DOB: September 30, 1992
Hometown: Bethel Park, PA
Career Highlights: After setting the American record in the 20-kilometer race walk at the U.S. Olympic trials with a time of 1:23:00.10, Barron
didn't seem satisfied and quickly turned his attention to bigger goals. "I would love to make race walking more popular. But
I need to be faster to do that," he said. "My time today is good but not great. I'm excited to be an Olympian, but that is
not my ultimate goal. It is a means to greater things for me." The 19-year-old Barron should have plenty of years ahead of
him to improve his performances, but for now he'll have to settle for breaking the U.S. mark previously held by his coach,
former Olympian Tim Seaman, who finished in second place at the trials. It was the second straight national championship in
the 20-kilometer race for Barron, who had successful brain surgery in 2006 to address a form of epilepsy. He later had to
deal with people poking fun at his race-walking workouts, but eventually chose to try to raise the profile of the sport in
the United States, which has never won an Olympic medal in the 20-kilometer race and has gone without one in the 50-kilometer
event since 1972.
