Career Highlights: One of three US women's hoopsters seeking a third straight Olympic gold medal, Bird is likely to start at point guard despite poor performances at the past two Summer Games. As a starter in Beijing, Bird had the team's second-lowest scoring average (3.0 points) and worst field-goal percentage (32.3) while tying for fifth with 14 assists in eight games - she was third in the WNBA that season with 5.1 per game. She averaged 12.7 minutes in seven games in 2004 but totaled just 20 points and eight assists while shooting 30.0 percent, including 2 of 16 from 3-point range. Bird was much better at the 2010 world championships as a starter for the U.S. team which earned the London Games berth, averaging 5.9 points on 48.9 percent shooting with a team-best 26 assists. A seven-time All-Star starter since being drafted No. 1 overall in the 2002 WNBA draft, Bird joins fellow former UConn star and U.S. teammate Diana Taurasi as the only players to win multiple NCAA, WNBA and Olympic titles. She remained among the WNBA leaders in assists in 2011 (4.9), also leading Seattle with a career-high 14.7 points per game and helping the Storm reach the playoffs even with star center Lauren Jackson missing much of the season due to injury. Bird, who plays professionally in Russia during WNBA offseasons, is a very good 3-point shooter but surely will be focused more on getting her teammates good looks in London.
