Career Highlights: The oldest member of the USA wrestling team headed to London, Byers will also be the most accomplished U.S. wrestler there.
A national team member for the last 11 years and 12 overall, Byers finished seventh in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics. He won
gold at the 2002 world championships and took bronze in 2007 and silver at the 2009 worlds. He's made eight total appearances
at the world championships and finished 24th in the competition in 2011. Byers is a member of the U.S. Army’s World Class
Athlete program and holds the rank of staff sergeant. He attended Kings Mountain High School, where he was the 1993 North
Carolina state champion and earned a scholarship to North Carolina A&T, where he studied animal science. Byers is a three-time
USA Wrestling Greco-Roman wrestler of the year (1999, 2002, 2009) who enjoys reading, traveling and riding motorcycles. While
he’s enjoyed plenty of success in his career, Byers is on a hot streak heading into London - in the last eight months, he’s
won the Sunkist Kids International Open, the New York Athletic Club International, the Dave Schulz Memorial International
and the Olympic qualification tournament. In addition to his 2008 experience, Byers served as Rulon Gardner’s training partner
for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
