Susie Scanlan
Sport: Fencing
Nation: United States of America
DOB: June 4, 1990
Hometown: St. Paul, MN
Career Highlights: Scanlan will be making her first Olympic appearance after finishing 16th at the Budapest World Cup in February to qualify
for the third spot on the epee team, pushing her past 2008 Olympian and now-alternate Kelley Hurley. Unlike a number of elite
athletes in her sport, the Princeton University student didn’t come from a family of fencers, instead begging her mother to
let her learn because she “wanted to try sword fighting.” At age 9, she began training at the Twin Cities Fencing Club with
Roberto Sobalvarro, who remains her coach. Scanlan, a member of the 2009 senior world team, is an avid athlete who competed
in basketball and cross-country and snowboarded when she was younger.
