Timothy Wang
Sport: Table Tennis
Nation: United States of America
DOB: August 17, 1991
Hometown: Houston, TX
Career Highlights: The 20-year-old Wang is the lone American male heading to the London Games to compete in table tennis after beating Barney
Reed in a play-in match on the last day of qualifying in April. Wang had never previously beaten Reed and only earned a spot
in the North American qualifying event due to a late run and a little bit of luck. He took a tiebreaker after winning his
final three matches at a U.S. qualifier two months earlier and saw other results fall his way to advance to the continental
tournament. Unlike many table-tennis players who spent hours as youths honing their skills, Wang did not play the sport regularly
from 2003-06, opting for tennis instead. When he picked up table tennis in earnest in 2006, Wang incorporated much of his
tennis background to the table. Although he is now based in Houston, Wang and teammates Ariel Hsing and Lily Zhang trained
together for four years at the India Community Center in California under coach Rajul Sheth, a former member of India's national
team.
