Career Highlights: Dreaming of competing in the Olympics since she was 4 years old, Brown-Trafton accomplished that in 2004, finishing 11th in the discus competition. She did much more than just get there in the 2008 Games, ending a 76-year gold medal drought in her event for the United States. Her performance in Beijing helped her earn the sport’s top honor, the Jesse Owens Award, as the female athlete of the year. Brown-Trafton won gold in convincing fashion, throwing her best mark - 64.74 meters - on her first attempt, with no one able to come within a meter the rest of the competition. Her throwing career began in college, where she was the NCAA outdoor runner-up in 2003. Brown-Trafton continued to dominate the discus competition after Beijing at USA outdoor competitions, winning two gold medals and two bronze in the past four years. When she is away from competition, she enjoys hunting with her husband and now works as a volunteer director of operations for Sacramento State University track and field.
