Queen UnderwoodSport: Boxing

Nation: United States of America

DOB: May 8, 1984

Hometown: Seattle, WA

Career Highlights: Underwood learned she was headed to the Olympics in unconventional fashion - through a phone call. That June 18 conversation left her in tears as she became the final U.S. boxer to make the squad headed for London. Underwood had originally failed to qualify due to a round-of-16 loss at the May world championships, where she dropped a 1-point decision to Norway’s Ingrid Egner after dominating her first two bouts. The IOC’s Tripartite Commission had a limited number of invites but did not have a suitable one for the lightweight class, leaving a berth to the next-highest finisher at the worlds who hadn't qualified - Underwood. “I now have the chance to write my own story and my winning the gold medal is now going to be the headline,” she said. Underwood is not among the medal favorites considering her early loss at the worlds and an unimpressive performance at the continental championships one month earlier. She needed a late comeback to win her opening bout by 1 point and then lost 24-17 in the quarterfinals to Canada’s Sandra Bizier. Underwood didn't exactly roll through her weight class at the U.S. Olympic trials in February, winning her final two bouts by a combined 4 points. However, the Seattle native is among the more experienced fighters in the first women’s boxing Olympic competition. She was the national lightweight champion in 2010 and '11 after winning three straight U.S. titles at light welterweight. Underwood medaled at the Pan Am Games in 2007 and '08, won the 2009 continental championship and claimed bronze one year later at worlds.
