Maxim RakovSport: Judo

Nation: Kazakhstan

DOB: February 7, 1986

Hometown: Karaganda

Career Highlights: After going undefeated over nine matches to post back-to-back first-place finishes at the IJF Masters Almaty in January and more recently the IJF Grand Prix Düsseldorf in February, Rakov is set to make his Olympic debut in London. The Kazakhstan native, ranked No. 1 in the world in the -100kg weight class, was - much to his dismay - unable to compete at the 2008 Games due to a shoulder injury. Rakov, though, went on to win the world championships a year later, defeating Henk Grol - currently ranked No. 2 in the world - in the finals. While Rakov, who also won a silver medal at the 2011 world championships, heads to the Olympics with gold medal aspirations, he expects stiff from competition _ primarily from Grol. Rakov has split six career matches against the Netherlands native, most recently defeating him in January. Rakov was trained by his father, a Soviet youth judo champion.
