Bernard Lagat

Bernard LagatSport: Track and Field

Nation: United States of America

DOB: December 12, 1974

Hometown: Tucson, AZ

Career Highlights: Entering his fourth Olympics and second competing for the United States, Lagat has accomplished nearly everything a distance runner can - with the exception of winning gold on the biggest stage. Lagat competed for his native Kenya at the 2000 Sydney Games, taking bronze in the 1,500 meters, then winning silver in the same event in 2004 in Athens. He started running for the United States in 2005, winning gold in the 1,500 and 5,000 at the 2007 world championships and the U.S. Olympic trials. However, he suffered an Achilles injury and had a miserable time in Beijing, failing to emerge from the 1,500 semifinals and finishing ninth in the 5,000. Lagat hasn't slowed down in the last few years, setting the American record in the 5,000 at 12:53.60 in 2011 and finishing second in the U.S. trials, just behind Galen Rupp. Now, he's after the lone title that's eluded him - being called an Olympic champion.
