Anthony Ervin

Sport: Swimming

Nation: United States of America

DOB: May 26, 1981

Hometown: Valencia, CA

Career Highlights: One of the more remarkable stories of the U.S. swim team, Ervin is returning to the Olympics for the first time since winning gold at the 2000 Sydney Games in the 50-meter freestyle. It’s well chronicled how the colorful Ervin auctioned off that gold medal on eBay to help tsunami victims in 2004 - part of what has been an incredible 12 years since that magical moment. Ervin also took gold in the same event at the 2001 world championships before retiring in 2003 due to a combination of burnout and a desire to discover a deeper meaning to life. A self-described "mystic," Ervin spent his first eight years after retirement working odd jobs and finally finishing his degree at California. Ervin got the desire to swim again by working with young kids in New York and, one year after returning to the pool, finished second in the 50 free at the trials to qualify. His press conferences in London should be exciting since Ervin - also known for his heavily-tattooed arms - loves to discuss philosophy, the Bible and his strange journey through life.
