Janet Cherobon-bawcomSport: Track and Field

Nation: United States of America

DOB: August 22, 1978

Career Highlights: Cherobon-Bawcom admitted it was an ugly way to make the Olympic team, but she’s not about to apologize for the unusual circumstances that helped her punch a ticket to London. Cherobon-Bawcom, who was born in Kenya but is a naturalized U. S. citizen, finished seventh in the 10,000 meters at the U.S. trials with a time of 32:17.06. Despite finishing well outside the top three, she had the necessary “A” standard, while three of the females that finished ahead of her did not. She also benefited from third-place finisher Shalane Flanagan’s decision to turn down the 10K invite to focus solely on the marathon. Cherobon-Bawcom was a six-time All-American at Harding University from 2002-05, winning Division II national championships in the indoor and outdoor 5Ks and outdoor 10K in 2005. She is the first Harding athlete to compete in the Olympics.
